  • CARMINA BURANA - A TRIUMPH!

  • On in 2004 and 2007, two of Maine's most distinguished performing arts organizations, the Portland Ballet Company (PBC) and the Choral Art Society (CAS), collaborated on a spectacular production of Carl Orff 's Carmina Burana - featuring over 200 singers and an orchestra.

Here's what the Critics said about the sold out performance:

"In a time when no event ever seems to live up to its advance hyperbole, it is rare indeed to find a performance that exceeds expectations. "Carmina Burana," by the Portland Ballet, the Choral Art Society and members of the Portland Symphony Orchestra, did just that before a packed house at Merrill Auditorium on Saturday night. I haven't heard cheers like that since the Patriots won the Super Bowl."

"One of the best features of the production was the balance of forces among orchestra, chorus, singers and ballet."

"The ballet company, choreographed by Andrei Bossov, outdid itself, both in solo and ensemble performance."

"His fine choreography is the essence of connection between the arts."

"All of the dancers, who remain on stage throughout a grueling routine, were inspired, but I must single out Nell Green and Tyler Sperry in the more individualized love poems, and the other male soloists, Luke Tucker and Derek Clifford. The costumes reflect Bossov's choice of emphasis, which should also be credited to artistic director Eugenia L. O'Brien."

"Bravo, and no talking on the way home."

    Portland Press Herald,
    Monday March 22, 2004

"A magnificent performance of Carl Orff's 'Carmina Burana' at the Merrill Auditorium heralds the coming of spring."

"Although far too seldom, every once in a while some brave souls take heart and present 'Carmina Burana' as a theatrical totality. Such was the case the the fantastic performance at the Merrill Auditorium...."

"It was in essence a fabulous performance from start to finish and a production that would rate five stars in any of the major cities of the world, and one that makes us proud of the artistic resources and talent in our state, and I concur with the audience that gave a standing ovation and several curtain calls."

Stuart Nudelman, York County Coast Star,
